After the conclusion of GALS 2017 inaugural season I am exhausted, but ecstatic about how the program turned out! After spending 7 nights sleeping in tents in the woods with 8 high school aged ladies, I have a renewed appreciation for nature, scientific investigation, hiking, snails, laughter, and indoor plumbing. As an experienced backpacker and avid environmental scientist, I had a good handle on what I was getting into, but for the participants, everything about this trip was new. After overcoming the challenges of living in the back-country and surviving off of what can be carried on your back, the participants took on the additional challenge of scientific investigations. I think the most exciting thing for me was watching these young women learn that you don't always need a degree or fancy equipment to do science, and that their own curiosity, creativity and ingenuity was enough to fuel amazing discoveries that I hope will inspire them to continue to push boundaries in all aspects of their lives.
